Sunday Writing Inspiration

Sometimes pictures can be phenomenal for finding inspiration. Here's something I am using for today's inspiration on my latest story, Edge of Darkness. This picture is exactly how I see Sasha, the heroine.

Sasha Wylde is very soft and feminine but a shapshifter on the run from a wolf pack that wants to force her to mate with their leader or kill her. With her parents dead, there is no one to help her and she has to rely on complete strangers, but they don't plan on doing it for free or out of the kindness of their hearts.

What kind of inspiration do you use to help spur creativity?

When the writing day slows down

I can generally tell when I have a problem with the plot. My brain wants to shut down and I don't want to write. I have been struggling to get 1000 words a day lately and not just because I have so much filling up my life outside of writing. I have a family, and a dayjob, and then there are the afterschool activities for the kiddos, but seriously I can still make time to write.

Usually.

However lately I have been sitting at the computer and opening the file and just making circles on the inernet, checking email, checking facebook, and getting a whole lot of nothing done on my story. Today I realized there is something about where the story is that is getting me hung up.

The characters usually go through a series of tests to get through the story. They see a call to adventure and they usually don't pick up the sword and go. They usually refuse the call to adventure before finally deciding to go. Sometimes someone gets in their way and tells them no, don't risk your life and ours. Sometimes it is their own fear they must overcome. Sometimes they are just being wishy washy, but they never say yes right away.

My heroine, is just doing anything her big strong men want her to. There is no refusal. She signed on the dotted line and isn't looking back. I have to figure out where and how it went wrong, but she can't move along this easily without trouble. She needs to have more conflict in her decision and a little unhappiness before she can live the dream of happily ever after.

Seriously. Is it ever easy for characters you can commiserate and identify with? Did Luke from Star Wars join up as a Jedi as soon as the offer was on the table? No, he said he had promised not to leave and to stay another year on the farm with his family. It was not until that last thread of connection was cut before he realized he had no choice. He had to leave and find a new direction for his life because there was nothing left for him on his home planet. His family had been killed and his farm was burnt to the ground. If he stayed, eh would certainly die too. It was time for him to take up the sword and fight or die.

So my inner critic has stopped me from writing until I go back and fix it. Now I see what is wrong, so I can spend the time changing things. I don't believe in writer's block. It's usually something pretty big that is wrong with your story or at war with your inner self that is not allowing you to move forward. I can write if I have to. I can spend the day clicking away and push out five thousand words when the story is right. When it is wrong, it is like trying to pet a cat the wrong way.

Nothing feels right.

Sometimes I go back and fix it, but sometimes I make a note of what needs fixing and move forward. The rough draft can be a little rough around the edges, but when you stop moving forward it stops getting done and that is not good either.

A little inspiration goes a long way...

So here I am. Alone. Just me and my story and I am at a stand still. I know where I need to take my story and where I need to go, but it's just coming hard at a word at a time. So sometimes I use a little push to get it going. Sometimes it's visual, but not as often I just set small goals and work towards those.

My story Edge of Darkness is at 5400 words this morning. I am going to get a download of one song when I reach 6400 words on the Ipad. Bribery works--no?

On a sidenote, this is how I picture the stars of this novel. The vampire brothers are quite hot blooded despite technically being part of  the undead.

Guest Post: Author AJ Jarrett

Hello to everyone and I hope Monday is treating you all well. I want to thank Missy for having me today. My name is AJ Jarrett and I just had a book released this past Saturday titled Set Me On Fire. Its part of Silver Publishing’s Men in Uniform Anthology so obviously when I saw the submission call firefighters were the first to pop into my mind.

Yes I have what my husband’s likes to calls an unhealthy infatuation with the men in that profession. I always love it when I go to the grocery store and the local fire department is there shopping as well. I stop and stare, because hello, they look so rugged and sexy in their uniforms. But in all honesty the most attractive trait, to me, in regards to firefighters is the courage they possess. To risk their lives for complete strangers will have this lady swooning every time.

Set Me On Fire is an M/M themed book. It revolves around two firefighters, Kelly Lynch and Nate Anderson. Nate is older and more experienced in their profession and in life. Where Kelly is young and still trying to find his way. When their feelings for one another become exposed sparks fly but is it enough to make a relationship?

Thanks again to Missy for having me and posted below is a blurb and excerpt from Set Me On Fire. I hope you all enjoy and have a wonderful rest of the week!

Blurb

Kelly Lynch wanted to become a firefighter to help people, but with his accident prone nature his boss, Nate Anderson, thinks he’s an utter fool. Kelly never planned to fall for Nate but now that he has, he realizes loving is easy; understanding and compromise are hard.

Nate has been attracted to Kelly since his first day at the station house. Watching the younger man day in and day out is frustrating. Kelly’s latest stunt almost got him killed and Nate fears losing the man of his dreams.

Will Nate’s demanding ways cause the embers of their love to die out? Or will Kelly prove he has what it takes to be with Nate, at work and in the bedroom?

Story Excerpt

"God, I swear if you get me out of this mess I promise to listen and follow orders for the rest of my life, or at least make the effort to try," Kelly prayed aloud as he crawled, belly down, across the dirty floor. He was doing his best to see through the smoke-filled room but still couldn't find where he'd entered.

Kelly scooted a little more, using touch more than sight to navigate his way through the smoky haze and chunks of debris. He had separated from the team of men he'd come into the burning building with. A choice he now regretted immensely.

He had made a stupid move, but he could have sworn he'd heard someone cry out for help. A completely bonehead move to run off without telling anyone. One of the first things they taught you when you became a firefighter, never leave your team, or at least partner with someone else, but never go off on your own.

But no, he thought he knew better and wanted to be the hero and save the poor individual stuck in this fire pit. Now he was starting to wonder if he'd just imagined he heard the cry for help.

"I'm so fucked." Kelly rested his helmet-covered head on the ground and then proceeded to bang his head on the hard floor. It was useless, he was trapped.

"Lynch."

Kelly sat up at the sound of someone yelling his name. What direction had the voice come from? He couldn't tell. The sound was so faint compared to all the hissing and crackling noises of the fire in full blaze all around him.

"God damn it, Lynch, where are you?"

He heard the shout again, only louder. Kelly felt his way around the floor until he came face to face with a boot. He started to look up when large, glove-covered hands grabbed the back of his jacket.

"What do you think you were doing, you dumb shit? You're lucky we noticed you missing."

Kelly could tell by the size of the man dragging him out of the entryway that it was Luke Parsons, one of the biggest guys in the house. He may be a big beefy guy, but he was super nice, and Kelly couldn't have been more grateful Luke found him and not the lieutenant of their station house.

"I'm sorry but I thought I heard someone call out for help." Kelly grabbed at Parsons' hand, still attached to Kelly's jacket, dragging him along. "Please, Luke, I know I heard someone," he pleaded as he tried to pull himself free of Luke's hold.

The fire raged through an abandoned building in the East Bottoms of downtown Kansas City. While the only people in this building were more than likely homeless, they were still people who needed to be saved.

"Are you sure, kid?" Kelly nodded enthusiastically. "Okay then let's see what we can find. We don't have much time; this building is going up faster than a hay bale."

"Okay."

As Kelly followed Luke back into the room, the sound of a faint cry grabbed both their attention. Luke pushed Kelly behind him as he made his way toward the small whimpering sounds. As they got closer, Kelly saw the slight frame of a man huddled in the corner. Luke bent down and snatched the man up in his arms.

Luke looked to Kelly. "Lead the way. Follow the way we just came and you'll see the crew in the hallway."

Kelly navigated through the smoke and falling ceiling tiles toward the exit. As he reached the doorway the hall was empty. He turned back to Luke. "They're not here." Panic started to eat away at his composure.

"Shit," Luke shouted. "Here, kid, take my radio and let the guys know we're coming out with another man in tow. They need to have paramedics ready for this guy."

"You know the way out?" Luke nodded as Kelly took the offered radio and lifted his face shield. "This is Lynch and Parsons. We got a survivor and we're coming out."

"Copy that, son. Make your way out fast. We just got the order to clear the building and let it burn. Move your asses now."

He looked back to Luke. "You get that?"

"Yep. Head out the door and the stairs are on the right. We need to go up one flight then a little ways down we’ll come to a set of double doors and that will take us outside." Kelly watched as Luke hefted the man higher on his shoulder. “Start moving.”

Kelly nodded his understanding and made his way toward freedom. Times like this he questioned why he wanted to be a firefighter. No one in his family was one, so it wasn't about carrying on a legacy or some shit.

As he pushed the door open with his shoulder, he was greeted by sunlight streaking through the smoky clouds rolling off the burning building. He looked back toward Luke, the man he was carrying appeared passed out over his shoulder. That was why Kelly had chosen this profession. He wanted to make a difference. Have a job he could be proud of.

"Over here."

Kelly and Luke walked right over to the ambulance and deposited the man with the paramedics. They then made their way over to the engine where the rest of the crew stood watching the fire burn. Kelly flipped up his face mask and removed his helmet. Then he took off his jacket, tucked the heavy material under his arm, and stared up at the building. If Luke hadn't found him, Kelly would be one crispy critter right about now.

"What the fuck were you thinking?"

Someone grabbed Kelly by the shoulders and threw him up against the side of the truck, causing him to bump the back of his head hard against the metal door. When his vision cleared he saw Nate Anderson, lieutenant of station house sixteen, standing right in front of him with the attitude Kelly had hoped to avoid.

"Hey, Nate, back the fuck up." Luke pushed himself between him and Nate. "If it wasn't for Kelly, that man over there would be dead."

Nate took a step back and looked toward the ambulance where the man was being triaged. Kelly could see the vein pulsing at Nate's temple. He wasn't happy and Kelly knew he would be hearing all about that unhappiness later.

Nate looked back at him over Luke's shoulder. "You and I will talk about this back at the station house." Nate pointed a finger at him and then walked away.

He was so screwed. Every time he made a mistake Nate made sure to tell him how and why he screwed up. Granted, it was Nate's job to go over the mistakes they made so they could learn from their errors, but his lectures were becoming a broken record. Kelly wasn't looking forward to this discussion.

Useful websites for writers

This is a website which is interesting and can give some unique information about things like sales ranks and if Amazon has tagged your book adult or not. There are a lot of little tricks you can use with this site, including finding out what Amazon bundles your book with or if they pair up your book with another for a discount.

I think it can be a useful tool to some so I am going to share the link. How you use it (or don't) is up to you.

http://www.salesrankexpress.com/

Another really nice site, although not always accurate is this one. You can track your book sales and based on the ranking it guesstimates the number of sales in a month, or a week, or a day. You can load up any book sold on Amazon that you are interested in tracking.

http://www.novelrank.com

All these sites have kind of cool stuff, and it might be distracting, but it is interesting. At least to me. Enjoy!

Show me the money-- Author resource

I love this site. It's put together by the author Brenda Hiatt and is her way of giving back to other romance authors. It is an anonymous listing by authors of what publishers across the board have paid various authors from different publishing houses.

It's a great resource for when you are trying to decide what to shop at which place and a way you can realistically determine what you have a chance of making there. While the numbers and mileage vary per book and author I have found the information on this site to be pretty accurate.

When an obsession crosses over

I am usually quite sane, but lately I have had an obsession I have been fighting and it's crossing over into my writing.

I have been dreaming of tropical waters, crystal white sandy beaches, and the cool ocean breeze that whispers in my ears as it comes inland. Yes, I want a vacation. Yes, I want to get away. Yes, I want a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of life and near peaceful waters and I can't stop thinking about it.

The last four books I have had my hand in are in exotic locations and every book I have planned to write in the next two months before the kids are out if school are the same. Give me the beach. My mind is screaming it at me and I just can't stop thinking about it. So I am beginning to see a pattern. What about you?

These are the releases for the last year and the coming soon books:

Sex on the Beach (m/f) -- set on Kaui, Hawaii

Bareback on the Beach (m/m) -- set on Kauai, Hawaii

Beach Bound (m/m) -- set on a deserted island north of Hawaii (releases May 19, 2012)

Strictly Business (m/f) -- set on a Caribbean island (coming to Siren Publishing June 2012)

Shark's Mate (m/m) -- set on a private island near Australia (coming to Siren Publishing July 2012)

*And I really don't see an end in sight to this pattern. My next three planned books to write are set to follow the Shark Shifter series.

My theory is maybe if I write it, this desire to visit the beach will leave my system or maybe I just need to make a trip to the beach this Summer. Roadtrip! lol

I just think it's funny this urge to experience the beach has crossed over into my writing.

What about you? Do you get obsessed with a certain subject and love to write about it, or read about or experience it? I once went three months where I only wanted Moose Tracks ice cream. I never wanted any other flavor. If I was offered ice cream and Moose Tracks wasn't on the list I turned it down flat.

Obsessed? Maybe a little, lol.

Lots of love, Missy Lyons www.missylyons.com

As Harry and Sally explore the island together, it's near impossible to keep her insatiable appetite for sexy adventures filled. The more time they spend together, the more his heart wants her as much as his cock.

Yet when her employers return unexpectedly, her job is at risk. Everything goes wrong in Harry's desperate attempt to keep her safe and protected, but he is determined that nothing can keep them apart. Even if his life is on the line.

Excerpt:

“Welcome to the Romance Connection! Where love stories come true every day and dirty little secrets love to come out and play!” The beautiful blonde game show hostess walked down the stairs pulling up the hem of her sequined dress so as not to trip on the flashy material. The camera loved her, but it didn’t do her justice. She was much more seductive in person with that low-cut neckline and engaging smile.

“So, tonight we have Harrison Ford and his match Madeline Newton after their first date last night.” The hostess tipped her microphone towards Harrison’s date sitting on the couch next to him. “So, Madeline, how’d it go?”

“Oh, well you know how these things are. It takes time to really get to know a guy.”
Harrison did his best to not grind his teeth. Last night had sucked as far as a first dates go. The woman had been ice cold to him all evening. She’d even ducked when he tried to kiss her goodnight. If this was the way things were going to be in the future, he was not looking forward to a trip with her to Hawaii. A whole week with her in the same hotel room would be torture. Personally, he’d rather get all his teeth pulled without pain killers.

“I guess it went okay, but I’m looking forward to learning more about Harrison on the islands.”

Madeline turned and played along the row of his shirt buttons. Her deft fingers traced the line of buttons before lingering near his neck. Harrison wanted to push her hands away, but refrained. He knew she was just doing it for the cameras. This was the most she had touched him. Ever.

“Well that will be up to our bachelor as to whether you win the $50,000 and take the trip to Hawaii together or not. He could always go alone and meet his dream woman there. Did you have fun last night Harry?”
He refrained from rolling his eyes, but it wasn’t easy. “I guess.”

He hadn’t had any fun, but he knew how this game worked. If he stayed with the girl chosen for him, together they could split the money and get to go on a vacation with each other, or he would get a consolation prize and go on the trip by himself.

“Let’s play a clip back for our audience and see if he’s telling the whole story.” The hostess smiled widely as if she knew a secret neither of them shared. The lights dimmed and a huge screen behind them began playing a clip of them having ice cream. Harry shuddered. That was a particularly dreadful moment of their date he wished he could forget.

Yeah, he had tried to be smooth and put his arm around her shoulders in the ice cream parlor. He was only being a typical man, testing the waters.

She threw his arm off and snarled, “What do you think you’re doing?”

Damn.

The six foot tall television screen made every emotion on Harrison’s face evident. It was embarrassing to see the shock and hurt on his face when she rejected him. That was the moment he realized he was face to face with a true ice maiden.

His past experiences had taught him ice maidens were all the same. They were almost always drop-dead gorgeous. But, like a poisonous plant they were pretty to look at, and deadly to the touch. He tried not to date women who were too gorgeous. The one time he had in college, she’d tried to use sex to get him to do what she wanted. It sucked to be used strictly for sex with no love attached. He wanted more in a woman than a sexy package.

“Just trying to keep you warm.” Harry watched himself shrug off the rejection on the big screen. He had tried not to show any emotion, but it stung then and it still did.

“Yeah well, keep your hands to yourself next time, buster.” Madeline then turned her head away and looked out the window, avoiding eye contact. She wasn’t interested in him.

Harry watched when her pretty pink tongue slipped between her lips to lick her cone. A sexy move that had left Harry feeling cold and lonely. The rest of the night, he’d kept his hands to himself.

The screen blacked out and the lights suddenly became brighter.

Harry’s tummy did a flip-flop and he wanted to empty the contents of his stomach.

“Looks to me like a fun time was had by all.” The hostess remarked sarcastically. Turning toward the audience she remarked, “Audience, get ready to make your vote but before you do, you need to know all the dirty little details. One of our contestants is not telling the whole story.”

Harry had told everything to the producing execs. So it had to be Madeline who was hiding something. He crossed his arms and looked expectantly at her across the couch.

The hostess grinned and looked straight at Madeline. “Come on, sweetheart. Is there something you want to share with us?”

“No. I like Harry. It just takes me a while to warm up. That’s all.” She smiled brightly and shifted in her seat.

The move raised Madeline’s mini skirt an inch higher giving the camera, and audience, a nice view of her smooth right thigh. “I can’t wait to go for walks along the beach in the moonlight with my new honeybunch. He’s so sweet. How could I resist him?” Madeline gave the audience a huge smile, flashing her straight, bright white teeth.

“You might want to tell him about your other sweetheart? Or, did you plan on taking him along too?”

Madeline’s face turned ghost white. “What?”

“You know? The other guy. The one you were making out with just after your date with Harry?”

“Oh, no.”

“Oh, yes!” The hostess’s face lit up with the secret finally revealed. “Let’s roll the tape for our audience.”

The lights dimmed again. Harry was relieved, because no one could see his reaction to the news. His belly clenched in pain as if he’d been hit in the gut by a baseball bat. No man wanted to be made a fool of—especially on national TV.

Yet, the huge screen showed him giving her an innocent kiss on the cheek at the end of the evening. Words rolled across the bottom of the screen telling the time and it wasn’t ten minutes later when another guy rolled up on a motorcycle. He flipped his long legs over the bike and met Madeline in the middle of the lawn where he picked her up.

His kiss wasn’t anywhere close to innocent. He deep throated her with his tongue and his hands went up her skirt. His mouth never left hers as he swung her up in his arms and strode into the house as if he owned it.
There was no question what was going to happen after the door slammed shut.

The lights returned to normal and beat down on Harry. This time their heat made him perspire. Madeline had been caught in the act. Her face was beet red, and Harry was sure it wasn’t from the lights.

“I can explain, Harry.” Madeline leaned forward to put a hand on his knee, but he pushed it away.

“We certainly hope so.” The hostess sneered. “I’m dying to hear your explanation. It has to be interesting.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be single when you go on this show?” Harry just couldn’t believe what he’d just witnessed.

“Technically I am. He’s married to another woman.” She looked at him with wide blue eyes. Harry almost felt sorry for her, but damn, how stupid did she think he was, not to mention the audience? He shook his head and rolled his eyes.

Why the fuck had he agreed to go on this stupid show in the first place? It should be easier to meet a good woman. Wasn’t it true women outnumbered men? His odds had to be good. Why couldn’t he find someone? He’d been looking for the woman of his dreams since high school. Where was she? One thing for sure, it wasn’t going to be Madeline.

“Oh, this just keeps getting better and better, doesn’t it?” The hostess turned to the audience.

“Now it’s your turn to tell us what you think. Audience press one if you think Harry should take Madeline, the swinger, to Hawaii and split the $50,000 with her. Press two if you think he should take his chances and go alone. Or, press three if you think he should send her to Hawaii with lover boy.”

“Harry, let me explain.” Madeline pleaded in a soft voice.

“Yeah, you had your chance.” Harry snapped. “When were you going to tell me about this other guy? Were you going to wait until I put a ring around your finger?”

“It’s not that simple. We have been off and on again for a long time.

He was fighting with his wife. Chad just wanted to be around someone who understood him. Nothing happened.”

“Nothing happened? You have got to be freaking kidding. That kiss was not a nothing happened kiss. How stupid do you think I am?”

She didn’t have time to answer.

“Okay. The votes are in! Harry, are you ready to make your decision?” The hostess’s perky sing song voice grated on his nerves.

“Yes, ma’am.” He muttered. Harry was more than ready for this to be over with.

“You’re not going to wait to hear what the audience wants you to do?” The hostess lifted one delicate eyebrow.

“Well, since you went to the trouble to take a vote, you might as well go ahead. But I don’t think it will change my mind.” He crossed his arms defensively. He hated being told what to do and no one was going to tell him who he had to date.

The hostess turned to the big screen and numbers lit up. “Ah, this is great! Thirteen percent think you should let the other guy tag along. Although I am not sure what his wife will think about that…”

“Maybe good ol’ Chad should take his wife on the trip with him and work on getting their marriage back on track.” Harry’s sarcasm wasn’t lost on the hostess.

“That wasn’t an option, Harry. Sorry. Thirty-three percent think you should take the trip by yourself and fifty four percent think you should take the money and the trip together. Maybe you can work out your little lover’s quarrel in Hawaii.”

“Harry, please! I need that money.” Madeline whispered and nudged his arm.

Harry ignored her. The decision was up to him. He could give a rat’s ass about her stupid love triangle. He didn’t want to be in the middle of her lies and deception. It was one thing if you agreed to see other people, but they had no such agreement.

“Well, it’s time to make your decision, Harry. What would do you want to do?” The hostess held the microphone to his mouth expectantly. Harry hesitated for a moment.

Writing fast isn't easy for everyone

I'd love to say writing is easy. The words just flow on the page, but the truth is it's work. I appreciate the help and support I have received from mentors and my readers. The last 7 years have been a learning process to say the least.

I write. I re-write and I write some more and there is a point I just have to call a story done and hope my baby will fly when it gets to the publisher. Skipping nay part of the process means more work for me later and a higher chance of rejection but the other thing I have been noticing a lot of writers are doing is just trying to churn out the titles. I am not sure I am fully happy with this. More books don't necessarily mean more money but there is hope.

I think part of my plan this year is to slow myself down and do justice to the stories I want to write. There is a series right now I am building but to do it right, I think it means I should be taking my time and developing my characters and the world they live in. Maybe someone else could get this series out in a month, but the 4 books may take me the rest of the year. We'll see. Either way, I am just excited to work on them. The characters are unlike anything I have ever worked with before.

When you have that kind of energy behind the story it can go quicker, but I tend to be a slow writer in general so I am not expecting it go fast or easy, but I can't wait until I can share more.

Read an excerpt here:

“How long‟s it been?”

“Two years now.”

“That‟s a long time to be celibate.” She said very seriously.

“You know it babe, and that‟s probably why I feel like my cock is going to explode whenever I‟m around you. I am as horny as hell.”

“Can I tell you a secret, Harry?"

“Sure. I just told you mine.”

Sally moved to straddle his lap. He could feel blood pump to his cock as it swelled in size and length. She pressed the apex of her thighs against his hip and it took all his strength to not throw her down in the sand and fuck her like a cave man. Her hands wrapped round his waist tracing little circles over his stomach to finally rest on his engorged sex.

Her words were breathless and raw with need. “I‟m horny too.”
