Today we are going to meet the Parents of the four sisters in the Stud Service series. William and Maria have been patiently waiting for grandchildren, but none of their willful daughters have had the slightest interest in keeping a man in their lives, instead putting the focus of their lives on their education and furthering their careers.

Me: Thanks for coming today.

William: Thanks for having us. (William adjusted in himself on his chair, and looked very comfortable in front of a television camera.)

Maria: Yes. We were very excited to come today. You never know, Savannah’s future husband may be watching. (She blew kisses to the camera and waved.) To all the single men out there, we have four beautiful daughters looking for a husband.

Me: (I coughed lightly to regain Maria’s attention.) Well, allow me to get right to the point Mr and Mrs. Gibson, it’s been in all the papers and I am sure everyone is wondering why you decided to make an ultimatum to your four daughters? They have to find a stud and get pregnant or lose their trust fund wasn’t that the deal?

Maria: (She wrinkled her nose at me in disgust.) You make it sound like I am prostituting my daughters. I am not a bad mother. I only want what is best for them. Shame on you!

William: There, there. Don’t get yourself worked up over this woman. She has no idea what we’ve gone through over the years. (He patted his wife’s hand and looked at her with pure adoration in his eyes.)

Me: But do you think it is right to force your daughters to get pregnant? (I am trying desperately to keep the interview on track and still don’t feel like my last question was answered.)

Maria: What do you think I am doing? Holding them down while somebody rapes them? No, you are a bad lady. (She pointed her short stubby finger at me accusingly.) I love my daughters.

William: I am sure what my wife is trying to say is we are trying to remind them what is important in life isn’t about going to school or getting the perfect career. It’s about finding love and making a family. We’re just trying to give them a shove in the right direction.  

Me: (Maria is looking like a volcano about to blow up, so I try to turn the interview in a new direction.) Did your parents have to force you to get married and have children?

William: I fell in love with Maria the day I met her. I told her that day I wanted to marry her, but she didn’t believe me.

Maria: (She rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her plum breasts.) You married me because of the shotgun my father had pointed at your back.

William: (He chuckled at her response.) I married you because I wanted to.

Me: How did you two meet?

Maria: Our families both owned ranches and we were neighbors. One night we just happened to be out and met under the moonlight at the creek that separated our properties.  

William: We were skinnydipping. (He grinned and Maria rewarded him with an elbow to the chest.)

Me: I can see you have a strong love for one another and I understand that you want to see your daughters happy as well, but what if your plans don’t work?

William: I don’t have any doubt that our plans will work. You see my daughter’s believe that life is a fairy tale, and they have been holding out for Mr. Right instead of looking at Mr. Right Now, but they can find a lot of Princes if they would be willing to kiss a frog or two.

Maria: (She huffed, and her exasperation was obvious.) My daughters are very smart girls, but they don’t know what’s good for them. They will be happier with a family and children to love them. I deserve grandchildren. I deserve to be happy too. (She began weeping and holding her face in her hands to cover her tears.)

Me: Are you okay, Maria? I am sorry if I hurt your feelings. (I am appalled I could have brought her to tears in such a short time and that something I may have said made her cry.)

Maria: (In a moment of bravery, she looked at me straight in the eye and with a fierce voice a litany of Spanish words escaped her lips and then ran from the room. I was frozen in place and shocked. I had no idea what she said, but I was sure I was being told where to go. )

William: I am afraid this interview is over. (He took up his coat and followed his wife from the room, calling to her in a soft voice.) It’s okay, dear. I promise you will have grandchildren soon.

In praise of the Bromance




In romance the relationship between the main characters overshadows all, but I have given some thought on the fact that a well handled 'bromance' between the hero and a secondary character, or between two secondary characters, can add quite a lot to character and plot development.




Often an author would refer to the hero as "a man's man", but seldom do they show how he would handle himself among other men. How does he interact with his friends, and what do they think of him? The way a man would approach the start of a friendship with another man can say a lot about him, and his character. Is he open, understanding? Does he flirt?




Yes, there is a certain amount of 'flirting' involved in the start of a 'bromance', though it is on a totally different level than that of the sexual flirting between a man and a woman! Of course, most of the gentlemen would deny this, but next time you see a budding bromance, watch for those signals! The shared looks, the nudges, and the punch on the shoulder... all part of bromance flirting.




As a writer of Fantasy, on a large scale, it was fun to include a couple of these bromance situations in my new novel, KIRDAI: Spark and Dagger. The initial stages of the bromance can often be as fraught with possibilities for misunderstanding as that of an actual romance, as in this scene between my hero, Dai, and his mentor and eventual best friend, Geshar:




' By this time they had reached the bathing room under the kitchen and for once Dai did not feel shy about stripping in front of another person. Conversation stopped until both had sluiced off under the showers and they had moved to the hot pool. Dai tried to study the other man

unobtrusively, wondering about him, then could not help the question that he

blurted out.

"You don't have a beard, and you don't have body hair, except for..."

The tips of Dai's ears turned red, but Geshar barked a laugh.

"No, and neither have you. And you don't even have any hair there."

This made Dai blush brightly as he realised that the other man had been studying him just as intently. He wondered if he was perhaps physically attracted to the big man. Was that why he felt so strangely comfortable in his presence? But no, his body did not react the way it had when he had listened in on the thoughts of some of the more amorous occupants of the castle at night.

"I just wondered," he muttered, turning in the water so that he partially faced away from Geshar.

"I understand. You've been among men who grow beards, and wear carpets on their bodies. And in turn they've looked at you, seen that you have no body hair, and thought you a child."

Geshar lifted himself out and sat down on the side of the pool with his feet dangling in the water.

"I only now realise how hard it must have been, and must still be, for you to be here among a strange people. It must have been difficult to know that you're different, but not to know why."

Dai turned to face him again, and nodded, dropping down until just his head showed above the water. Hiding... '







Of course, the Onlashian dragons, with their love of adventures and all things extreme and their bonds with humans, make the 'bromance' type opportunities almost unlimited In KIRDAI the dragons are intelligent beings, intellectually and emotionally on the same level as their human counterparts. And the initial phase of a bond between a human and a dragon is very much like the start of a romance (or tailchase, as the dragons call it), or bromance, for that matter. I had so much fun writing these scenes that I would love to share one of them with you, below.




Btu for now, I will leave you with the thought that friendship, and how it

is approached, can be a very important part of how we see a character, or

even a person in real life. We should take notice of this in our real

relationships, or in literature, to learn more about ourselves and others.

'... And as if he did not have enough to think about, there was Karragh. After he had thought that they had built up a good friendship, that he had finally found a truly close friendship, the dragon had started to withdraw. Every time Geshar looked for him, Karragh was busy elsewhere. If they had spoken three sentences in the previous two days, it had been a lot. He felt as if he had been abandoned. Geshar, the rock, was feeling hurt. And that made him irritated on top of the frustration...




...Geshar caught himself just in time as he nearly fell over his own feet, his musing finally having distracted him to the point where he had lost the momentum of the exercise. Uttering a soft curse he stalked off the practice ground.

Many eyes followed him. He knew that, and he did not care.

His irritation had moved to anger and being the person he was, Geshar needed to act to solve his problems. There was nothing he could do about Tanika, but there was something he could do about Karragh and also, for that matter, about his so called responsibilities to his family and his country. He had four other brothers who were equally capable of serving as the next Warlord to follow his uncle. Any one of them could do it; especially the youngest, who at twenty three already showed a lot of promise.

The family would have to wait though. Right now, there was a dragon he needed to see...




...Karragh had been sitting on a hilltop, watching the practice. Like most dragons he had an eye for beauty and art, and the movements of the marflitta were so much like a dance that it was a joy to behold. He was not the only dragon observing, so nobody would have even given him a second look. That he was only watching one participant was fortunately not obvious. As Geshar stumbled, then strode off the field, the big brown dragon hummed softly to himself. Time to get lost.

Karragh had been cheating.

He knew it, and he did not care. If someone such as Warah found out, he probably would be in great trouble, might even get called in before the elders for a breach of ethics. But to him, the goal justified the means. That his goal was selfish, he did not care about either.

Whereas Geshar had had no contact with Karragh, the dragon could not say the same. Since that first night that he had taken the man flying with him he had retained a light mental link with him. It was something Geshar would also have been able to do with Karragh, if the man had known that the possibility existed. They were already partially bonded. All Karragh had to do was to get Geshar to realise and then admit it.

The conversation with Minelbet and Tanika had actually given Karragh the idea for his current course of action. They had jokingly referred to it as a 'courtship', but afterwards, while contemplating the situation, he had realised that they were not that far off. So he had set his trap just as if it was a courtship. Show interest, woo a little, flirt a little, then withdraw to see if the other party takes the bait...




... now it was time for the next step. If the big man was looking for him, he (Geshar) would find him, but not for a mark or two. Spreading his wings, he (Karragh) took the roundabout way back to his spot in the camp, chuckling to himself... revelling in the situation.

This was as good as a tailchase. One he knew he had every chance of winning.... '

Mythological Beasts: The Unicorn

I am fascinated with mythological creatures, fantasy, and magic. This type of storytelling has the ability to whisk the reader away from reality and allow them to travel carefree in another world. I've always been split between reading pure fantasy and romance. I cut my teeth reading classic fairy tales and I was upset when I saw the Disney version of the Little Mermaid. How could they have her not die at the end and turn to sea foam for a thousand years? That movie is not the same as the book, but I digress.

I am blogging about unicorns today because I love all mythological beasts. They fascinate me.

So if you aren't familiar with them, I am going to share what I've learned about unicorns. Maybe you can add to it in the comment section.

The first thing you may notice is that the unicorns look remarkably like a horse, only there is one horn on their head very near the top of their mane and between their ears. Yet this is no ordinary horse. Their beauty is legendary and they spook easily. They aren't tame enough to ride and cannot be broke like a horse. Only the gods can ride them or someone with exceptionally powerful blood inside of them. 

One would be extremely lucky to see them in the daylight. They almost always are seen in or around a full moon and use their magic to stay hidden deep in the forest away from humans.

They are also fiercely protective of their babies and very good mothers. The most common types of unicorns have a white coat and a silver mane but they can come in any color that a horse will.

There is something sexual in the way the majestic creatures are attracted to beautiful maidens. Okay--okay--not just any maidens but virgins. Using a virgin to find a unicorn is better than honey in a trap because they are the only ones the large beasts will trust to get close enough to touch.

They are gentle and curious creatures.

But they do fight and are also strong. They use their mighty horn as a weapon and it is harder than any steel or sword made by man. Also, a great deal of the animals magic is stored in the horn so it is not only used in many powerful spells and potions but it also makes a wonderful magician's wand. These are just one of many reasons it is highly sought after in the human realm and has been hunted into near extinction in the medieval ages.

Unicorns can have light or dark magic, but knowing which is which is only important if you ever find one. My very first book I wrote when I was about ten had a unicorn in it and it talked. I may never know if that's true or not, but I'd like to believe they are intelligent creatures and can still be found deep in the forest and not just my heart.

I am sure you are all aware that my book, Strictly Business has just released on June 6th. Big Wahoot moment for me, lol. 

I had a little cheat sheet which I used to help me remember names and get the details just right. I thought I would share this with you and introduce the characters in the Stud Service series. 

While there are parts of the series that take place in the girl’s hometown of Destiny, Texas, each story in this series takes place in a different part of the country. (Destiny is a purely fictitious name existing only in the author’s imagination smack dab in the middle of Yellow Rose Valley, filled with sexy cowboys that embody every woman’s fantasy man.)

Cast of Characters:

Maria Gibson is mother to four beautiful but career driven daughters. Even after countless hours of nagging, she doesn’t understand why they just can’t seem to wake up and settle down to make a family. Each one seems determined to remain single despite the long line of suitors they are intent on ignoring.

Maria has a strong Latino background and wishes they understood how important family really is. She lives in the family home in Destiny, a Mediterranean mansion on acreage that still runs cattle even though they make their real money from the oil wells dappling their estate.

William Gibson is father to the four daughters featured in the Stud Service series. He loves his children dearly but has forced them to make some kind of a decision in their love life by reversing their trust funds.

Savannah Gibson is the oldest sister and just finishing her last year in training to be a doctor. Her parent’s ultimatum couldn’t have come at a worse possible time. Now she has to finish out her last year at Nashville and look for a father to her child, but the only guy she is attracted to is a cowboy. It can’t possibly work. Everyone knows she hates cowboys. (Book 1—Strictly Professional)

Sabrina Gibson is the second oldest of the four girls and is considered the math geek of the family. Accounting and business smarts are in her genes but that doesn’t mean she wants to pick the father of her child in a smooth logical decision. She wants to fall in love and doesn’t like feeling backed into a corner, to produce grandchildren on the spot for her parents. (Book 2—Strictly Accountable)

Susannah Gibson is the middle child and has striking green eyes and dark brown hair. She’s tall for a woman at five foot eight, but it’s not her height that’s been holding her back all these years. She is more of a bookworm than a socialite, and has many fears mostly from her recurring nightmares from when she was kidnapped as a small child. Now, she’s focused on her career as a marine biologist and there’s nothing that will stop her from her planned research trip to the Caribbean, even if it does mean all her toys are taken away. (Book 3—Strictly Business)

Serena Gibson is the youngest of the four sisters and she owns a physical therapy clinic. She has been enjoying living the easy life. She can’t afford to have this ultimatum happen because most of the work she and her staff perform is for under privileged kids and is considered charity work. Which is nice but of course, but it doesn’t pay the bills, and without a bankroll she won’t be able to continue her mission. (Book 4—Strictly Physical)

Ethan Russell is William’s assistant and lawyer who helped him draw up the paperwork to reverse his children’s trust funds. As a trusted friend, he is also sent out to check up on the kids from time to time to ensure they are safe and sound when they insist on travelling to other countries without any resources or money. He plays a small part in Book 3—Strictly Business.

Colt Vance is a wealthy entrepreneur and business man who met Susannah in the Caribbean while working on building a restaurant for his hotel on the beach. A clandestine affair is just the distraction he needs and he willingly accepts her offer to fill his nights with their mutual pleasure, until he discovers the secret she has been keeping from him. (Book 3—Strictly Business)

Strictly Business will be available June 12 exclusively on the Siren Bookstrand website for 3 weeks and then released to other ebook retailers such as Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Kobo Books. It is scheduled for a print release sometime in November of 2012.
